From mineral to designer jewelry: students visited the Van Cleef & Arpels museum in Paris

Students of the Fashion Design Institute admired the wonderful jewelry creations of Van Cleef & Arpels at the Paris museum

Who doesn't know the jewelry pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels that are elaborate in design and material? The precious works of art were and are worn by style icons such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and the Duchess of Windsor. Students from the Fashion Design Institute were allowed to visit the Van Cleef & Arpels museum in Paris and learned about the close links between mineralogy, gemology and the art of jewelry. In the process, they also embarked on a journey into the origins and evolution of our planet. Meteorites, stones, crystals, fossils and the like are witnesses of times long past, when the earth was formed from cosmic material and hit by meteorites. And last but not least, it was underground movements such as the shifting of continental plates that made possible the incredible variety of minerals we can find in the earth today. For the students of the Fashion Design Institute, there was literally cultural history from its origins to the present day to marvel at, the highlight of which was without a doubt the wonderful objects and jewelry from the house of Van Cleef & Arpels itself.
